The Premier League resume

The Premier League resumed its action in grand fashion on Monday after taking a break for the World Cup, and Antonio Conte praised Tottenham for their “great character” after the team mounted a remarkable comeback against Brentford to draw 2-2.

In the first Premier League match since the middle of November, Antonio Conte’s team was in danger of suffering a catastrophic loss at the Community Stadium after Vitaly Janet and Ivan Toney put Brentford in the lead.

In his first game back for Tottenham after missing a key penalty in England’s loss to France in the quarterfinals of the World Cup, Harry Kane scored to get the Spurs’ comeback off to a strong start.

Since 1948, Brentford has not been victorious against Tottenham, and despite Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s equalizer with 19 minutes remaining, their long wait for a win over the north Londoners will continue.

Tottenham heroic escape

The compelling drama may not have had quite the high stakes of Argentina’s penalty shoot-out triumph over France in the World Cup final, but Tottenham’s heroic escape act showed why the English top flight is the world’s foremost domestic league.

“My evaluation of the second half of the game was that it went pretty well. It was a really thrilling game. “It’s my goal to win every match, but I’m fully aware that it’s not going to happen,” Conte remarked.

“Even though it’s encouraging to have another comeback, we need to work on being more consistent.

We’ve come a long way since the end of the last campaign. Now is the time to keep pushing ourselves beyond our comfort zones. This is not an easy task. We have shown a great deal of character.

In the fight to qualify for the Champions League, Tottenham maintains its position as fourth in the rankings, four points clear of fifth-placed Manchester United.

In the other matches that will take place later on Monday, league leaders Arsenal will play at home to London rivals West Ham, second-placed Liverpool will travel to play Aston Villa, and third-placed Newcastle will take on Leicester.

Tottenham had already let up 11 goals in their previous five league matches, and they gave up another one after just 15 minutes of play in west London.

Hugo Lloris, the goalkeeper for Tottenham, was given the day off after France’s disappointing performance in the World Cup final, and Fraser Forster took his place in goal.

Mathias Jensen’s shot was headed straight to German midfielder Janet, who shoved the ball into the back of the net on Forster’s league debut for Tottenham, which was a rough start for the young goalkeeper.
