At the Newport Folk Festival, audiences were treated to an extremely rare performance by Joni Mitchell.

The iconic performer, who is 78 years old, hit the stage during a performance that was already star-studded and was billed as Brandi Carlile and Friends. Since the early 2000s, this was the first complete set that she has done.

On July 24, 2022, in Newport, Rhode Island, Joni Mitchell gave a performance with Brandi Carlile and Friends as part of the Newport Folk Festival at Fort Adams State Park.

The audience at the Newport Folk Festival on Sunday was treated to a full set performance by Joni Mitchell, a first for the singer-songwriter since the early 2000s.

The legendary musician, who is 78 years old, took the stage during a star-studded performance that was being billed as Brandi Carlile and Friends. Other notable performers at the show included Wynonna Judd, Holly Laessig of Lucius, Marcus Mumford of Mumford & Sons, and Taylor Goldsmith of Dawes, among others.

Carlile, who is 41 years old, has been a supporter of Mitchell’s work and has honored her, along with a great number of other artists, at a number of award ceremonies. These ceremonies include the Kennedy Center Honors ceremony in 2021 as well as the MusiCares Person of the Year ceremony in this year.

After the MusiCares event, during which other artists such as Beck, St. Vincent, Mickey Guyton, John Legend, Cyndi Lauper, and Sara Bareilles also played, Mitchell enthused, “Who was such an incredible musical evening for me, to hear my song done so wonderfully by everyone that was on stage.”

She suggested that she might “retire now and simply let other people do it.” Since it has been widely considered that Mitchell has retired from performing ever since she had a brain aneurysm in 2015, the statement generated some conjecture that she may simply be intending to act again in the near future.

She did, in fact, perform.

A total of 13 songs were performed by Mitchell, some of which was “Big Yellow Taxi,” “Summertime,” and “Both Sides Now.”

The performance ended with her rendition of “The Circle Game.”

In 1969, Mitchell had his last performance at the Newport Folk Festival. According to her website, she did not play a complete performance in the United States since the year 2000, when she was on her Both Sides Now Tour of America tour. In addition, she was the featured performer in a benefit event held for The Walden Woods Project at the Wiltern Theatre in Los Angeles in the year 2002.

At the MusiCares event that was held in her honor, Mitchell, together with Carlile and other performers, gave performances of “The Circle Game” and “Big Yellow Taxi.”
