Sasheen Littlefeather, a Native American activist who turned down Marlon Brando’s Oscar for The Godfather in 1973, died at the age of 75. She had breast cancer and passed away on Sunday.

People called me and I ignored them all,” she recalls. “I left a few armed guards at my side and continued walking straight ahead, holding my head high, knowing that I was the first Indigenous woman to make such a political statement in the history of the Academy Awards.
