JIM BROWN PASSED AWAY AT THE AGE 87
NFL LEGEND AND SOCIAL ACTIVIST JIM BROWN PASSED AWAY AT THE AGE 87

Jim Brown, a legendary running back for the Cleveland Browns and a prominent social activist, passed away on May 19, 2023, at the age of 87. Brown was one of the most dominant players in NFL history and a trailblazer for athletes who sought to use their platform to advocate for social justice.
A FOOTBALL LEGEND
In 1936, Jim Brown was born on St. Simons Island in Georgia. His college football career was at Syracuse University, where he was a two-time All-American and won the Heisman Trophy in 1956. In 1957, the Cleveland Browns selected Brown, who quickly became one of the league’s most imposing players. During his nine-year career with the Browns, Brown set numerous records and won three NFL championships. He was selected for the Pro Bowl each year he played and commanded the league in rushing eight times. Brown retired from football in 1965 29 years of age, being remembered as one of the greatest NFL players ever.
A SOCIAL ACTIVIST
After retiring from football, Jim Brown became increasingly involved in social activism. He was a vocal advocate for civil rights and worked closely with Muhammad Ali and other prominent athletes to promote social justice causes.
In order to advance economic growth in black communities, Brown also established the Black Economic Union. He later became involved in gang intervention work, founding Amer-I-Can, an organization that helps young people escape gang life and build better futures for themselves.
A COMPLICATED LEGACY
Despite his many accomplishments on and off the field, Jim Brown’s legacy is not without controversy. In 1965, he was accused of assaulting a woman and was later charged with rape. Brown maintained his innocence but ultimately pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of assault and battery.
The incident has cast a shadow over Brown’s legacy as a social activist and has led to difficult conversations about how to reconcile his contributions to civil rights with his troubling personal history. As sports journalist William C. Rhoden has noted, “Jim Brown is not just one thing.”
REMEMBERING JIM BROWN
The passing of Jim Brown has been met with an outpouring of grief from fans and fellow athletes alike. Cleveland Browns owner Jimmy Haslam called Brown “one of the greatest players to ever wear a Browns uniform” and praised him for his contributions both on and off the field.
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell also released a statement honoring Brown’s legacy: “Jim Brown will forever be remembered as one of the greatest players in NFL history and as a true pioneer for social justice. His impact on our league and our society will never be forgotten.”
Jim Brown’s legacy is complex, but there is no denying his impact on both football and social justice. As we remember him, we must grapple with both his successes and his failures, recognizing that he was a flawed but deeply influential figure who left an indelible mark on American sports and society.
