In 1936, Jim Brown was born on St. Simons Island in Georgia. His college football career was at Syracuse University, where he was a two-time All-American and won the Heisman Trophy in 1956. In 1957, the Cleveland Browns selected Brown, who quickly became one of the league’s most imposing players. During his nine-year career with the Browns, Brown set numerous records and won three NFL championships. He was selected for the Pro Bowl each year he played and commanded the league in rushing eight times. After retiring from football, Jim Brown became increasingly involved in social activism. He was a vocal advocate for civil rights and worked closely with Muhammad Ali and other prominent athletes to promote social justice causes.
In order to advance economic growth in black communities, Brown also established the Black Economic Union. He later became involved in gang intervention work, founding Amer-I-Can, an organization that helps young people escape gang life and build better futures for themselves.
A COMPLICATED LEGACY
Despite his many accomplishments on and off the field, Jim Brown’s legacy is not without controversy. In 1965, he was accused of assaulting a woman and was later charged with rape. Brown maintained his innocence but ultimately pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of assault and battery.
