Award-winning Senior Investigative Correspondent for CNN Drew Griffin
According to his family’s statement to CNN, award-winning Senior Investigative Correspondent for CNN Drew Griffin lost his fight with cancer on Saturday and passed away as a result. He was 60.
In a statement to employees, CNN CEO Chris Licht described Drew’s passing as “a heartbreaking loss to both CNN and our whole profession.” Drew was a highly regarded investigative journalist whose work had a significant effect and perfectly exemplified the organization’s goal in every possible manner.
During his almost two decades of service as an investigator for CNN, Griffin reportedly participated in the production of hundreds of news pieces as well as a number of documentaries, as reported by CNN. His reporting has previously been awarded prestigious honors such as Emmys, Peabodys, and Murrows.
According to the network’s claims, Griffin had been reporting up until the day he died away and had managed to keep his sickness a secret from the majority of his coworkers.
Michael Bass, the Executive Vice President of Programming for CNN

In a message to the investigative team, Michael Bass, the Executive Vice President of Programming for CNN, wrote, “Fearless and artistic at the same time, he understood how to drive a subject ahead to its boundaries, but he also knew how to convey it in a manner that would make it easy for everyone to comprehend.” How many times has he persuaded a resistant interviewee to speak with him? How many times has he dared to tell those in authority the truth? How often has he been the one to turn the tide on something that really mattered… It was a privilege to work beside him and to see the ways in which his contributions altered the course of history.
One of Griffin’s most notable tasks was a year-long investigation that revealed delays in medical treatment that contributed to patient fatalities in Department of Veterans Affairs facilities throughout the country. This study was one of Griffin’s most notable projects. His team’s findings resulted in the resignation of the VA secretary, which was then followed by the adoption of federal legislation and a significant shift in the way veterans’ appointments are handled.
Other Griffin studies included investigations into sexual assault charges made against Uber drivers, fraud claims made against Trump University, and reports that dispelled the fallacies of massive election fraud, among many more. These are just a few examples.
Patricia DiCarlo shared sentiments

Patricia DiCarlo, the Executive Producer of CNN’s investigative unit and someone who worked with Griffin for over a decade, said in a CNN story on his passing that “Griffin was an extraordinary writer who fashioned pieces into “compelling, must-see TV tales.” When a tale about Drew Griffin begins, you already know that it’s going to be fantastic. His unique approach to the language set him different.
Griffin began his career in journalism as a reporter and cameraman for WICD-TV in Champaign, Illinois. After that, he worked for television stations in Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Washington. Griffin is originally from Chicago. In January 1994, he became part of the reporting staff of KCBS News in Los Angeles.
He leaves behind his wife, Margot, three children, and two grandkids after his passing.
