Military service in South Korea has been controversial for many years. More and more South Koreans do not see the point in it. In this regard, the Ministry of Defense of the country often provides men with various benefits, sometimes considering each case separately. Conscripts are allowed to postpone the service or reduce its term. As a rule, only celebrities: Olympic medalists, musicians, dancers, and actors.

For example, Tottenham footballer Son Heung-min was in the army for only three weeks. His service life was reduced after he helped South Korea win the 2018 Asian Games. In addition, then he was granted a delay of 2 years.

Every Korean male between the ages of 18 and 28 who is physically fit is obligated to serve a minimum of 20 months in the military.

However, the updated rule allows some music singers to postpone their duty on the condition that the culture minister approves.

The action will consequently be given to Jin, who is the oldest member of BTS and will turn 28 in just a few days.

Famous athletes and classical musicians have been exempted from or put off from military service in the past.

Military Duty Act for BTS:

According to the changed Military Duty Act, “a pop culture artist who was approved by the Minister of Culture, Sports, and Tourism to have significantly improved the image of Korea both in Korea and around the world” can put off service until they are 30.

As the boyband’s popularity has grown around the world, BTS-mania has spread around the globe.

They were however, the first K-pop group to be nominated for a Grammy. This happened last week. Their most popular song, “Dynamite,” was up for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, along with songs by Lady Gaga and Taylor Swift.

Moreover, they just made history by being the first all-Korean pop group to win the top spot on the Billboard 100 singles chart and the first group to have a non-English song debut at the top of the list.

The BTS Army, a group of fans, praised the new law on social media.

“Congratulations, Jin!” wrote one user on Twitter. “I’m so happy I can’t even put it into words.”

“What a time to be alive,” said someone else.
