In today’s day and society, who doesn’t know about the Oscar awards? The Oscar awards are globally recognized as one of the greatest and grandest awards in the filmmaking industry. Nonetheless, let us dive right into what Oscar awards are and what are the 2024 Oscar Nominations?

WHAT ARE THE OSCAR AWARDS?
The Oscars, officially known as the Academy Awards, are a set of prestigious awards for artistic and technical merit in the film industry. The awards are presented annually by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS). The various category winners receive a golden statuette, commonly referred to as the “Oscar.” The Oscar statuette is officially named the Academy Award of Merit.
The awards were first presented in 1929, and over the years, the Oscars have become one of the most recognized and esteemed honors in the entertainment industry. The categories cover various aspects of filmmaking, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Original Screenplay, Best Adapted Screenplay, and many others.
The Oscar ceremony is a major event in the film industry, attracting global attention and featuring performances, speeches, and red-carpet appearances. The awards ceremony aims to recognize outstanding achievements in cinema and celebrate the art and craft of filmmaking. With the 2024 Oscar nominations announced, the award ceremony is to be held on 10th March 2024 at 4pm PT.
CATEGORIES AND NOMINATIONS
The 2024 Oscar nominations are not going to be a huge surprise for any of us. We all know and have probably watched these movies in the cinema when they came out. The nominees for the category of “Best Actor” are Bradley Cooper for Maestro, Colman Domingo for Rustin, Paul Giamatti for The Holdovers, Jeffrey Wright for American Fiction. And of course – my personal favorite – Cillian Murphy for Oppenheimer.
The category for “Best Actors in supporting role” has the following nominees: Sterling K. Brown for “American Fiction.” Robert De Niro for “Killers of the Flower Moon.” Robert Downey Jr. for “Oppenheimer.” Ryan Gosling for “Barbie.” Mark Ruffalo for “Poor Things.”
The nominees for the “Best Actress in leading role” are Annette Bening for “Nyad.” Lily Gladstone for “Killers of the Flower Moon.” Sandra Hüller for “Anatomy of a Fall.” Carey Mulligan for “Maestro.” and Emma Stone for “Poor Things.” Even though I was expecting Margot Robbert to be nominated for her lead role in the movie “barbie”, it was indeed a disappointment.
The final category that I will mention is of the “Actress in a supporting Role” with the following nominees: Emily Blunt for “Oppenheimer.” Danielle Brooks for “The Color Purple.” America Ferrera for “Barbie.” Jodie Foster for “Nyad.” and Da’vine Joy Randolph for “The Holdovers.”
Of course, for 2024 Oscar nominations there are more categories, but these are the ones worth mentioning most.
BLOCK-BUSTER MOVIES
While we’re at the topic of mentioning the 2024 Oscar nominations. I thought we should also get a sneak-peak on the movies that have gotten the honor of being nominated. So, moving on to this topic, I would give a brief review or more like a synopsis about the two biggest box-office movies, Oppenheimer & Barbie.
- Robert Oppenheimer, the guy with a name that sounds like a supervillain, was basically the brainiac behind the atomic bomb during World War II. Born in 1904, this dude became known as the “father of the atomic bomb” because he led the charge on the Manhattan Project, a super-secret mission to build the first nuclear weapons.
So, picture this: World War II was in full swing, and everyone was freaking out about the possibility of Nazi Germany getting their hands on atomic bombs. Oppenheimer was like, “Hold my coffee,” and gathered a bunch of brainy scientists to work on building the most powerful and destructive weapon known to humanity.

Fast forward to 1945, and Oppenheimer’s team drops atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, effectively ending the war. But here’s the thing – it also sparked one heck of a moral debate. The bombs caused massive destruction and loss of life, and Oppenheimer had a serious case of post-atomic bomb guilt. Oppenheimer later acknowledged the destruction his creation had brought about to the Japanese people and had fallen into a dilemma.
In the end, Oppenheimer’s story is a wild mix of scientific genius, moral dilemmas, and Cold War drama. He left a lasting mark on history, raising big questions about the use of powerful tech in times of war. The name Oppenheimer may forever be linked with the atomic bomb, but his legacy is as complex as it comes – a mix of brilliance, regret, and a dash of Cold War intrigue.
Sound-Effects:
The on-point sound effects, the in-depth and immersive story, the surreal acting. All these make Oppenheimer one of the best movies to be released in 2023 and has earned a rightful place in the 2024 Oscar Nominations.
There was this whole Barbenheimer fever worldwide with the release of Oppenheimer and Barbie simultaneously on 21st July in cinemas. People could just not choose which movie to watch and ended up watching both at the same day or different days. With both movies being the talk of the town – or in this case, talk of the world. They were nominated with Oppenheimer dominating with 13 nominations.
Barbie
Following this topic, we turn to the movie “Barbie”. With it being included in 2024 Oscar nominations in multiple categories creates a whirlwind in film industry. Margot Robbie totally nails it as the main character in the movie. I mean, can you even imagine anyone else playing the role of Barbie? She’s got the whole blonde hair, blue-eyed thing going on, and she rocks the over-the-top optimism needed for this wild, candy-coated world. Plus, as Barbie’s understanding grows, Robbie handles the more complicated stuff in the dialogue like a boss, thanks to Gerwig and her co-writer Noah Baumbach.
Ryan Gosling
Then there’s Ryan Gosling, stealing scenes left and right as Ken. He starts off as Barbie’s fulltime needy boyfriend and then goes full-on manly doofus, thinking that’s how a real man should act. Gosling manages to be charmingly clueless, selling the sincerity of his character’s square-jawed earnestness. Plus, he taps into his old “All New Mickey Mouse Club” musical theater vibes, making the whole thing a hilarious ride. It’s basically a blast watching these two in action.
So, the movie kinda hits pause every now and then to explain stuff to us – and then repeats those explanations a couple more times for good measure. You know, that breezy, sarcastic vibe it had at the beginning was way more effective in getting across its thoughts about toxic masculinity, entitlement, and the awesome power of female confidence and teamwork.
There’s this one character who goes on this long rant in the final stretch about the whole struggle of being a woman and dealing with society’s messed-up double standards. The mom in me was totally nodding along like, “Yep, someone gets it!” It felt like this character knew me personally and was just chatting directly to my soul. But then, the movie critic in me was like, “Okay, this is getting a bit preachy and in-your-face,” even though it did drop some serious wisdom.
A movie that gives both entertainment and food for thought is definitely one that has accomplished a lot of goals on its front. In my opinion it definitely deserves to be in 2024 Oscar nominations.
